| What should I be paid hourly for my Secretary position at a private law firm? I just currently got this job here at a law firm in Northeast Alabama. I am working in an office with only 6 people. Three lawyers and two other women. I am personal secretary for 2 of the lawyers and 1 of the other girls is personal secretary for the other lawyer. The last girl does real estate and other things. I do dictations, write and mail: letters, medical time lines, etc. I make coffee and answer the phone. I also greet customers and everything that comes along with that responsibility. I do not receive benefits at all until I have been here a year and then after the year I still will not receive health care benefits. Please if you can give me a good estimate on a hourly wage that is fair I would greatly appreciate it. I have looked online and have found only wizards that say the average but im not so sure they are correct. Thanks in advance! I do not have any experiance in the Law field but I do have 2 years secretary experiance. I do not hold any certificates but I do have an Associates Degree in Pre-liberal Arts and will be obtaining another in May in Computer Information Systems. And by the way I am not getting paid even close to the estimates everyone has provided (4/06/10-3:55 p.m. central) which is very disappointing. |
| "Hi Karen"
I researched your question and the best I could come up with is about $28, 000 annually. This is the average for your position in Tucson, Arizona. Hope I was of some help! Warm regards, Miami Office Furniture |
| Hi Karen What was your condition of employment when you started at this law firm ? Were you taken on a temporary basis, to become permanent later ? If so, generally a temp worker does not get benefits. My suggestion would be to ask them to make you permanent staff now if they are happy with your work, so that you can get benefits as well. Try a local temp agency and find out what the hourly rates are for your kind of position. That will help you with your position when you speak to management. |
| I understand Karen that you just want to know how much salary you exactly need to receive in that kind of job. As far as I am concerned, working in the real estate business receives an average remuneration and additional benefits. But, you will have more edge to check the right salary for you if you are a regular staff in the office. I wonder whether there is this kind of system in your office. |
| Go for Judy's advice. To think that your bosses are lawyers they should know your rights and they should know how to pay you properly. I think it is important if you seek legal advice :) not with your bosses ofcourse. You have the right to demand with the exact amount that you worked for. Anyway, good luck on your quest to getting the proper payment that should be given to you. |
| Yes, I agree with Judy that it's best to consult other secretaries in other firms to find out the going rate. Then you can assess if you're underpaid. If you are, perhaps you can ask your employers to give you a raise. Always do your best and show your bosses that you're the best secretary that they can ever find. Once they feel that they need you, they would be willing to pay you good money just to keep you in their company. |
