Ok, so I am due for a raise. How do you go about confronting your boss for a raise, especially when sales are down right now? I am wondering if I should even ask?

Comment #1 Janet from Computer World -

My husband walked into his boss' office and said that he was due for a raise in January and wanted to know the status of it. His boss told him that right now she wasn't sure if she would be able to give him one or not since they didn't qualify for bonuses this year either. He pretty much told her that he was expecting a raise in January and that he would be very disappointed if he didn't. He jokingly remarked that maybe he should go find another job. She got this scared look on her face and promised him that she would speak to the President of the company to lobby for him getting a raise.

Wow talk about guts!

I have been in situations where i thought i deserved a raise but i never was really good with that sort of thing and would just wait and hope i get one... Which is a horrible thing i know heh.

Comment #3 Debra from The Desk -

I think getting a raise can be a tough issue. The best way to bring it up to the boss is by showing them how much you have contributed since the last raise. What is a fair raise amount is what I am wondering? Should raises be done on a percentage scale? I think .25 and .50 raises aren't fair. I think a good raise must be at least a dollar. Just my opinion.

In order to be able to ask for a raise you should be keeping a record of everything you are doing that is above and beyond the normal.

If for instance you are in sales and you can show you are the top sales representative even though sales over all are down then you can walk in and say "After my last year's record of being the top sales representative in the company I feel that I deserve a raise. I understand that sales are not going to well overall but I am doing my job and making money for the company so I feel I am deserving of seeing something in return."

If you work in an office, keep track of all the overtime and extras you have done during the year and walk in with that information and say: "It has been a year since I had a raise and I would like to discuss it if you have a few moments."

Comment #5 Sweetness from Earth, the Universe -

Well, first of all I think you need to ask yourself if sales are down is it because of something I'm not doing? If you can honestly say no to that question and you feel you deserve a raise even though sales are down then you should ask the boss if he has a few minutes to talk to you in private.

Get all your ammunition together when you go and talk to him and show him the work you have done over the last year.

Tell him you understand that the company is in a slump right now but that it will change and right now your expenses are going up and you feel that you have done enough to warrant a merit raise.

You could also ask him that if the business picks up and you show that you are still pulling more than your own weight can you come back later for a more substantial raise.

The worst he can do is say no. So prepare yourself for that before you go and ask him so that you don't get caught off guard and end up leaving the office angry. After all when sales are down so is the profit for the company.

You need to show clearly how your work makes extra profit for the company.

I would suggest making sure you have done everything you could to show that you are do deserve a raise. If you are in sales make sure your numbers are up and that you are at the very least meeting quotas. I do agree with the others posters if for some reason your boss can't afford to give you a raise don't get too upset.

Wow, I think it takes guts to ask for a raise. Since you are in sales I think the best way to ask for a promotion is to make the company a good profit.
