I have worked in a administrative office for the past five years and I haven't received a promotion. I have applied for high positions but I don't ever get the position. It seems that the people who are getting promotions are kissing up to the boss. What some tips you can give me to help me get a promotion?

First thing that you need to look at is the why. I don't think they are getting promotions just because they are kissing up. Are they going above and beyond to get extra work done? Are you doing more than you were asked to do and doing it well? You need to know where your strengths and weaknesses are and the best way to find out is to have a chat with the boss.

Say to him that you really want to get ahead in the company and you have applied for several positions and have been passed by and you really want to know where you need to improve your abilities in order to get the promotion.

I'm sure if he/she is a decent boss they will talk openly and honestly with you. Maybe you do something that you aren't even aware of that makes them a little nervous about promoting you.

The first thing you should be doing is an intro-spective check on yourself. Ask yourself if you are doing all you can to show that you deserve the promotions.

Thanks for the tips. I'm sure that there are some areas that I am lacking or can improve in the workplace. There isn't a such thing as a perfect person because everyone can improve on something. I work on a military base as a civilian employee and it seems that mostly retired military move up in the higher positions. I am looking for another job because I don't think this is the right place for advancement. Also, I have a couple of businesses on the side that I am seeing profit from so I may quit my job and do the business full time. Oh, I have a plan.

Hey, you can join the crowd and kiss up to the boss. LOL! You need to stand out in the office. You can take on some extra work, a project, or attend an office function. Also, make sure you are on time to work.

Personally, I think that the fastest way to get a promotion is about who you know. We live in a society thats based on money and knowing the right person. I'm not trying to take anything from anyone because I know that everybody didn't get a job or promotion by knowing someone. I think if you have a successful business and a savings then take the business route. We live in a society that allow people to single handedly to make their own profit.

Keep track of your accomplishments. Find ways to increase productivity. Offer well-researched suggestions that will reduce costs. Accept constructive criticism. Always be prepared to deal with any situation without becoming defensive, blaming others or blowing your professional image.

No matter what your educational background is, there's always more you could learn. Look into night courses, seminars and workshops, and ask your mentor and your boss if they would add value to the company. Read business publications and books. Sign up for online informational newsletters. Stay up-to-date on your industry as a whole, not just your job.
